August 24, 1814 - The British Set Fire To Washington

The burning of Washington, D.C.:

Washington was saved by bad weather!  A thunderstorm with an embedded tornado extinguished the fire that would have otherwise burned the city to the ground.

I shared this fact with the husband and he said that The Presidents Home was scorched and dirty and it was painted white.

And that is how it became The White House.

I did not check on this but it makes a good story.
